Augustus II regained the throne (1709–1733) after the Russians defeated the Swedes at the battle of Poltava. Through ostensible defence of the lords’ rights against absolutism, the Russians increasingly established themselves in the Commonwealth. In 1720 the Russian representative, Dolgorukij, twice dissolved the Seimas, which tried to evict the Russian army. Augustus II was a connoisseur of art and a passionate collector. On his orders, the famous Meissen porcelain factory was established in 1710, a collection of works of art was compiled in Dresden, and topographic measurements of roads were made in Saxony, Poland, and Lithuania.
