Jadvyga Mozūraitė-Klemkienė (1923–2009) was deeply influenced by her mentors Juozas Mikėnas, Bronius Pundzius and Juozas Kėdainis, from whom she learnt the basics of sculpture. However, it was Mikėnas’ influence that resonated with her most profoundly, serving as the cornerstone on which she developed her distinctive style. Rooted in her teacher’s reverence for Lithuanian folk sculpture and the art of Classical Antiquity, Mozūraitė- Klemkienė’s sculptures exude laconicism, monumentality, and an emphasis on generalised forms. A recurring motif in her work is women. The Baltic Sea portrays a woman in abstracted forms, drawing its inspiration from Mikėnas’ work, while hinting at Neoclassical elements. The decorative lines adorning the sculpture, seen in the cascading folds of her garments and the stylised curls of her flowing hair, imbue the composition with rhythm and harmony, while evoking the imagery of undulating waves in the sea.
