In the 1930s, tenders were held for posters and postage stamps, and artists created medals, bas-reliefs and other memorial signs to commemorate the nation’s heroes. They included The Loop by Petras Rimša (1881–1961). As well as the Lituanica plane in flight, the composition includes a view of New York, from where the experimental plane piloted by Darius and Girėnas took off, and Kaunas, the destination of their legendary journey. At the centre of the bas-relief is a depiction of the pilots’ funeral. The funeral ceremony on 19 and 20 July in Kaunas attracted almost 60,000 mourners.
