The famous Lithuanian natural scientist, botanist and Vilnius University professor Stanisław Bonifacy Jundziłł (1761–1847) became famous for his book ‘Description of Plants Growing Naturally in the Province of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania according to the System of Carl Linnaeus’, which was published in Vilnius in 1781. This work introduced the plant species growing in Lithuania to European botanists. The German botanist Willibald Besser called a species of wild rose that he discovered in 1814 the Jundziłł wild rose (Rosa jundzillii) in honour of the Lithuanian botanist. Today it can be found in the Vilnius University Botanic Garden, which was once looked after by Jundziłł. Another book by Jundziłł is presented here. The textbook ‘Basics of Botany’, published in 1829, has different illustrations of plants to the first book: 17 copper engravings from the Department of Engraving at Vilnius University.
