After Lithuania regained its Klaipėda District, painters flocked there between 1923 and 1939 to paint the Courland Spit. This picture of J. Šileika is valuable not only as a work of art, but also as a historic piece of ethnic culture. The archaic existence of fishermen of that land inevitably left a strong impression on the artist. The composition of the picture is rational, focussing on the closely situated and sunlit houses. Their contrasting colours help to accentuate them against the blue space of the sea and the dark foreground of the picture. This creates an impression of unusually lucid air. The sand of the dunes is enriched with tender shades by decorative patches of colours.
