In 1938, Jan Maksymilian Kasprowicz visited Vilnius, and painted a landscape with the chapels of the Stations of the Cross. Kasprowicz was not interested so much in the religious meaning of the Stations of the Cross as in expressing the Impressionist spirit of the sunlit forest, the decorativeness of the picture, the thick impasto texture, the broad brushstrokes, and the colourful alternating patches of light and shade.
