A cross emerges from a dark cloudy background with the dead figure of Christ on it and the lonely St Mary Magdalene kneeling forlornly at the foot of the cross. Her long golden hair is loose, and she is looking upwards. This interpretation of the Crucifixion was already known in Baroque art, but it became very common in 19th-century Romanticism. It gives the event an impression of real happening, elucidates the drama of the moment, and underlines the connection between the mourning saint and the Crucified Christ.
