The ‘Dictionary of Three Languages’ (Polish, Latin and Lithuanian) by Konstantinas Sirvydas (1579–1631) was the first printed Lithuanian dictionary, and an important linguistic and cultural work. The dictionary had a special educational importance: it was a handbook for learning Latin and Lithuanian, and was used by authors of Lithuanian religious writings and priests who worked in Lithuania whose native language was not Lithuanian. Not only did Sirvydas include a large number of colloquial words in his dictionary, but he also coined many new words, which eventually found their way into the contemporary language.

The particularly varied story of the ownership of this book is reflected in the handwritten inscriptions and stamps on the title page and the flyleaf. Its last known owner was Jurgis Šaulys (1879–1948), a diplomat and bibliophile, and a signatory to Lithuania’s Act of Independence of 16 February 1918.
