Created:1835-1841

The famous 19th-century historian, journalist and promoter of the national consciousness Teodor Narbutt (17841864) wrote about the political and cultural development of Lithuania from the earliest times to the Union of Lublin of 1569 in nine volumes of ‘The History of the Lithuanian People’. He analysed various aspects of Lithuania’s mythology and origins in detail, extolled old Lithuania, and emphasised his negative opinion of the union. His historical concepts and his view of the past were steeped in Lithuanian patriotism. Through his works, Narbutt nurtured the Lithuanian national and patriotic self- perception in the 19th century. His work inspired Motiejus Valančius, the Aušrininkai poets, Maironis, and others who encouraged the Lithuanian spirit.
