Mikołaj Chwałkowski (d. after 1700), one of the best 17th-century historians of law, was an envoy of the Duke of Courland to the royal court of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the reigns of Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki and Jan Sobieski. Chwałkowski’s most important legal and historical work Regni Poloniae ius publicum ... was published in Königsberg in 1676 and 1684. At the centre of attention of this work is the history and law of Livonia, Courland and Semigallia, vassal duchies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
