The motif of an expectant young woman recurs frequently in the sculptor’s work. In 1990 he crafted a relief of the silhouette of a woman, with her breasts and protruding belly, which seems to emerge from a bronze plate. Turning to the side, her face is obscured by her hair, while the focus is on the burgeoning forms of her body, symbolising the new life. In the same year he sculpted a round piece on the same theme, where a young woman stands with her head bowed and her face veiled by her hair. She stands calmly and unashamedly, her nakedness exposed, emphasising the new life that is being nurtured. Executed in Romas Vilčiauskas’ (b. 1966) characteristic classic style, the sculpture has realistic and yet gently stylised proportions, with outstretched shoulders and slender hands accentuating the woman’s youth and delicacy.
