The picture was painted when M. Dobuzhinsky was back in Lithuania, participating in the exhibition of the Plastic Art Group of the Lithuanian Artists’ Society (1923) and at the same time, waiting for a decision on granting him Lithuanian citizenship. The graveyard chapel motif might have stuck in his subconscious earlier, when he lived in Lithuania before the First World War and could visit his family burial place in Rasų cemetery. The picture encompasses respect for the past and the feeling of eternal silence coming from symbolism.
