The Swedish historian, geographer and Catholic priest Olaus Magnus was strongly opposed to the Reformation, fell out with Gustav I (Vasa) of Sweden, and was exiled. He lived in Rome, later in Gdansk, and in Italy again. It is quite likely that he visited Lithuania. After the death of his brother Johannes Magnus, the Archbishop of Upsala, he was appointed his successor. In his main work ‘A Description of the Northern Peoples’, Olaus Magnus gives an account of the history of the Nordic peoples and the political life and customs of the time, and describes the geography, mineral resources and nature of the region.
