‘Album of Vilnius’. Series II, title page of fascicle No 3

Author: Hippolyte Moulin (1832–1884)
Created:1850
Material:paper
Technique:chromolithograph
Dimensions:55.50 × 40 cm

The publication of the Album de Wilna by the doctor and art patron Jan Kazimierz Wilczyński lasted from 1845 to 1858. Its title page is one large still-life, a collection of articles from archaeological excavations, from which the gilded letters of the title emerge. The collection is rich, attractive and very informative, with hatchets, tips of spears, jewellery and amulets. A potential buyer would know from his very first look at the title page that the publication was intended to commemorate and immortalise the past.
