John III Sobieski, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1674–1696), personally commanded 20 battles in wars with the Cossacks, Moscow, the Tartars, and Sweden and established an anti-Turkish coalition. In 1683 at Vienna he defeated the Turks, finally ending their further incursions into Europe.
