Kamianets-Podilskyi was one of the most famous fortresses in the southeast of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), the early history of which is connected with the name of Grand Duke Algirdas and his son Kaributas Dmitrijus. For centuries, the fortress protected the borders of the state from its enemies, and was considered to be an important outpost in the defence of Christendom against the Muslims. Set on a high natural rock, and fortified and expanded many times, it preserved its picturesque and mysteriously enchanting Medieval appearance. The artist selected a good vantage point to show the grandeur of the ancient fortifications, at the same time as showing its connection with the town next to it.
The lithograph was printed in Album widoków historycznych Polski (Album of Polish Historical Views) published by NAPOLEON ORDA in Warsaw in 1875–1882, and in a second series entitled Album widoków guberni grodzieńskiej, wileńskiej, mińskiej, kowieńskiej, wołyńskiej, podolskiej i kijowskiej (Album of Views in the Provinces of Grodno, Vilnius, Minsk, Kaunas, Volhynia, Podolia and Kiev).
