A kantyczka is a religious song book, a collection of songs in the folk style. The term is often understood simply as a book of old hymns or an old prayer book. Vincentas Valmikas (17801836), the parish priest at Vilnius Cathedral, undertook to edit and publish Catholic hymn books in the early 19th century. In 1820, he edited, expanded and revised the hymn book ‘The Voice of the Heart’ by Pranciškus Šrubauskis, and published it under the title ‘Samogitian Kantyczkas’. Nine editions of this hymn book appeared altogether. Valmikas’ ‘Kantyczkas’ was corrected and supplemented by Bishop Motiejus Valančius (18011875) in 1855. ‘The Holy Songs of Ploughmen’ by the poet and priest Antanas Baranauskas was included in subsequent editions and reprints of ‘Kantyczkas’ (after 1860). The Ellex Valiunas book collection contains 14 different editions of kantyczkas, published between 1844 and 1904.
