Petras Repšys was born in 1940, grew up in Šiauliai, and moved to Vilnius in 1960 to study graphic art at the LSSR Institute of Art. He still lives in Vilnius today. Repšys is one of the artists of the period from the 1970s to the 1990s to whom the country’s past is of the greatest interest, since Soviet ideologists tried to erase it from the public memory in every possible way. He has devoted all his oeuvre, including graphic art, illustrations, murals, paintings and sculptures, to Lithuania’s historical and cultural heritage, and its immortalisation in art. Vilnius, with its old architecture, has attracted his attention too: between 1978 and 1993, he created the series of etchings Vilnius, of which 43 sheets are in the Valiunas Ellex collection.
