When the artist returned to Lithuania, he was enchanted by its nature and did not want to go anywhere else. He was inspired by the nature’s quietness, its permanence and the seasons with their inherent inertia – the culmination of summer and stagnation of winter. He painted the picture Kaunas in winter (1924), which became a classic, while the small Landscape (1923) was like his modest introduction into the search for a more intimate scene and more subtle colouring.
