P. Kalpokas and J. Šileika are the unsurpassed painters of our old river Nemunas. J. Šileika was the master of epic scenes and P. Kalpokas – of lyrical scenes. This is one of the best landscapes created by P. Kalpokas during the last decade of his life. In this picture P. Kalpokas – as if in a new role – returns to his former impressionist landscapes, seeking new combinations of colours.

Older artists did not introduce any particular stylistic innovations during the 1920s and 1930s. The trend for Realism, with some touches of early Modernism, prevailed in painting. Features of Impressionism can be seen in the work of Petras Kalpokas (1880–1945), and in some of the lyrical landscapes by Antanas Žmuidzinavičius (1876–1966).
