The artist liked to walk along the Andes at a height of 2,500 metres and paint the Las Yungas foothills. There he could observe the life of the Indians close-up, and became a skilled landscape painter. He was inspired by the views of high mountains, and the lush jungle vegetation in the valleys, where he found many shades of green.
