Adam Międzyblocki (1883–1956) was a prominent painter of the interwar period. Whereas Zaczyński had depicted the winding street and the quiet rhythm of the architecture, Międzyblocki emphasised the broken play of light and shade in his watercolour of Literatų Street. He preferred a vertical format, with the bell tower of the Church of Sts Johns at the end of the street neatly rounding off the composition. This view of the street was popular in the 20th century, not only in works of art, but in photographs too. The vertical lines of church towers in views of the streets of the Old Town were the most valuable features of urban planing of Vilnius that Międzyblocki often portrayed. Watercolours of Literatų Street such as this were so popular that he painted many more of them.
