The grammar ‘Basics of the Lithuanian Language’ by Christian Gottlieb Mielcke (1732–1807) was the third Lithuanian grammar, after one written by Daniel Klein (1653) and another by Philipp Ruhig (1747). Mielcke made use of Ruhig’s grammar, but considerably improved and revised it, and discussed Lithuanian dialects more extensively. The chapter ‘A Short Guide to Lithuanian Poetry’ was a significant event in literary history, because an extract from the epic poem ‘The Seasons’ by Kristijonas Donelaitis was published there for the first time. The book in the Ellex Valiunas collection once belonged to Petras Klimas (1891–1969), a diplomat, lawyer and historian, and a signatory to Lithuania’s Act of Independence; the title page bears the stamp of Klimas’ library in Paris.
