The coloured lithograph by Gustav Leutzsch reproduces a watercolour by Albert Kretschmer (1825–1891), a German artist and an expert in historic costume, portraying Prussian Lithuanian women in festive clothes. Unlike Eduard Gisevius (1798–1880), Kretschmer did not take a special interest in the lives of the peasants of Lithuania Minor, although he included several illustrations of Lithuanians in Prussian lands and their traditional clothing in the second edition of his book Deutsche Volkstrachten, which was published in Leipzig in 1890. Four pages of the book are devoted to a description of Lithuanian traditional costume.
