Philipp Ruhig (16751749), the vicar of Walterkehmen in Lithuania Minor, collected material for his Lithuanian-German and German-Lithuanian dictionary not only from written sources but also from the living language, the dialect of the Insterburg district. Ruhig also collected data for a grammar of the Lithuanian language. The work was completed by his son Paul Friedrich Ruhig (ca 17251781). ‘A Basic Grammar of the Lithuanian Language’ was published in 1747. The work by the Ruhig father and son contributed to the development of the written Prussian-Lithuanian language, and served as a practical handbook for language learning and as an aid for translators. Kristijonas Donelaitis also had this book in his library.
