The heritage from ancient times – the mound – intrigued E. Kulvietis as a valuable object; therefore, he reflected it precisely and naturalistically. The artist’s style and artistic thinking were influenced by the strong “academic” foundation acquired at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and by his life in Chicago (1910–1914), USA, where he worked as a photographer. A unique point of observation was chosen for painting this picture: it enabled him to realise the whole grandeur of the mound.
