Periodical TYGODNIK ILLUSTROWANY (Warsaw).
Woodcut after Michał Elwiro Andriolli.
The Warsaw engraver P. Dziedzic made a woodcut depicting the suburb of Markučiai, based on a drawing by Michał Elwiro Andriolli (1836–1893), which was printed in the magazine Tygodnik Illustrowany (no. 216, 1872). Residents of Vilnius liked Markučiai, and this is why in the mid-19th century, Adam Kirkor wrote: ‘We come once again to Markučiai Bridge. To the right of the bridge, the road leads up to the ruins of the Kiškai palace, but let us go straight to Markučiai. This is Doctor Godlewski’s small estate, consisting of several houses for rent in the summer, several peasants’ cottages [...]. It is impossible to describe the beauty of this road, since you would have to write praise and exclamation marks all the time [...]. From here, through the fields and over the Vilnia, which, after escaping from the steep and sandy slopes, twists and turns again like a serpent through green meadows, makes a turn, and hurries on …’ In 1884, Dr Godlewski’s estate in Markučiai was bought by the engineer Alexander Melnikov, the Russian minister of transport, who gave it to his daughter Varvara as a dowry. Her second husband was Grigory Pushkin, the son of the poet Alexander Pushkin, and this is how the estate has kept going the memory of the famous Russian poet. A museum about Pushkin opened at Markučiai in 1948, and it is still running today.
