Stefan Römer (1900–1951), who was self-taught, occasionally participated in exhibitions in interwar Kaunas. He lived in Vilnius and on the Bagdoniškis estate in the Rokiškis district. In 1927, with help from a relative, the lawyer Mykolas Pijus Römeris, he left to study in Prague for several years. The influence of the Art Deco style, which was popular in Czechoslovakia at that time, can be seen in his Portrait of a young woman with a cigarette. The femme fatale in the portrait fits into the big city environment better than into smaller and more conservative cities like Kaunas and Vilnius.
The Art Deco style is also visible in Römer’s painting Michaś Mieczkowski, which is close to Vilnius Neoclassicism. This work was shown in 1935 and 1936 at the First Autumn Art Exhibition in Kaunas. Most of his works were lost to fire in the Second World War, and are now only rarely found in Lithuanian museums and private collections.
