This is a work from the early period of J. Mackevičius’ oeuvre, painted in Paris. The artist was mesmerised with the Luxembourg Gardens, which flourished not far from Montparnasse. One can recognise the sculpture Fountain of the Observatory by Jean- Baptiste Carpeaux. The painter skilfully simplified the natural shapes and while painting from nature, he originally composed and arranged the main patches of colour. The picture is painted in soft broad strokes. In this fragmental composition, J. Mackevičius managed to reproduce the spirit of a city park.
