The poem Pan Tadeusz, or the Last Foray in Lithuania: A Nobility’s Tale of the Years 1811 and 1812 by Adam Mickiewicz (17981855) is an epic narrative about nobles and peasants in historic Lithuania. It is about an old manor house, the heroic deeds and funny adventures of the nobles, dramatic mysteries, and superficial intrigues of life. The poet wrote the work in exile after the failed uprising of 1831, which is why it is steeped in nostalgia and love for his homeland. Pan Tadeusz has been translated into 33 languages. In 2014 it was included on the list of Unesco’s Memory of the World Programme.
