After Michał Stachowicz (1768–1825).
Seria litografii przedstawiających malowidła Stachowicza we wnętrzach pałacy Biskupów Krakowskich, Lwów, 1852.
This lithograph was drawn and printed in the workshop of Marcin Jabłoński in Lvov. It is one of a series of 16 lithographs of the historical paintings by Michał Stachowicz (1768–1825) that used to adorn the Bishop’s Palace in Krakow (Seria litografii przedstawiających malowidła Stachowicza we wnętrzach pałacu Biskupów Krakowskich). After being remodelled between 1817 and 1820, the palace was adapted for storing various historical works and relics. Unfortunately, most of the interior furnishings were lost to fire in 1850. Among the works of art lost was a composition that showed the story of the arrival of the Romans in Lithuania, led by Palemonas. A rather naïve composition expressing a Romantic sensitivity, it shows an imaginary, ancient, ‘wild’ Lithuania, and a group of Romans in armour disembarking. They find a hilly and thickly forested country, and clearings and caves inhabited by bears, elk, and other wild animals. The expressive gesture of Palemonas signifies the founding of a new state, and the union between civilisation and nature.
