Kazimierz Idczak (1909–1970) made lithographs, copper etchings and linocuts, and showed them in annual exhibitions of work by students at Stephen Báthory University. His engraving The walls of the Bernardine Church and the Art Department in Vilnius was exhibited in 1938. The subject was important to young artists, as it was their alma mater. The Department of Art operated in the Bernardine friary during the interwar period, and an easel in the bottom left-hand corner of the engraving serves as an allusion to art education. The thick walls of the church and the friary are viewed from the Bernardine garden, and are separated from it by an open arcade, which was walled up after the war. The artist portrayed real shapes which he geometricised, and highlighted the conditional nature of the engraving technique, its sharp and pure texture, and the rhythm of the lines.
