Anafielas. Vitolis’ Lament (Anafielas. Pieśni z podań Litwy. Pieśń pierwsza. Witolorauda)

In 1840–1845, the Polish historian and writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887) wrote the romantic poem Anafielas (Kraszewski borrowed this strange word, allegedly Lithuanian, meaning ‘the Otherworld’, from Teodor Narbutt’s mythological legends). The poem was in three parts: ‘Vitolis’ Lament’, ‘Mindaugas’ and ‘Vytautas’ Battles’. In the first part, Kraszewski described Vitolis, an imaginary hero of pagan Lithuania, and his campaigns, based on material found in Narbutt’s ‘History of Lithuania’. Stanisław Moniuszko composed the piece Vitolis’ Lament (the composition is listed in the appendix).
