The lessons of Impressionism are most vividly embodied in this picture. However, having been a creator of realistic pictures for a long time, the painter remained faithful to realistic principles in composition, and did not rely on the spatial possibilities of colour. He pitched the poppy field sidelong, full of subtle vibrations of atmosphere, and, as is common in realistic painting, he attempted to create an impression of space retreating into the distance by means of a linear and accentuated perspective (instead of a dialogue of warm and cool colours).
