This is a rare student work by the famous art historian Vladas Drėma (1910–1995), produced in the spring semester of 1932. In the book Atrasti Vilnių (To Find Vilnius, 2010) dedicated to Vladas Drėma, there is a comparison (pp. 350–351) of this poster with a more refined and freely composed advertisement for the same Okocim beer by his fellow student Kazimierz Idczak (1909–1970), now in the museum of Vilnius Academy of Art. The comparison is not to Drėma’s advantage, for it is clear that his style had formed long ago at school, and remained under the influence of his teacher Vytautas Kairiūkštis (1890–1961). With the proliferation of Western trends, it was difficult for Drėma to follow tendencies in Polish graphic design, although it could have been enough just to consult with Idczak, who had trained in Poznań and won a few prizes for his posters. This is just one more argument that Drėma’s choice to give up painting in favour of art history was right.
