The book ‘The Customs, Laws and Rituals of the Peoples of the World’ by the German medical doctor Johannes Böhm Aubanus (Boehm, Boemus, Bohemus, Bohemus Aubanus, 14851535) was published in Leiden in 1541. The work made its author famous and was considered a 16th-century bestseller. It went through more than 40 editions in various European cities, was translated into Italian, French, English, Spanish and Czech, and continued to be published in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was the first work in the field of comparative ethnology. The author described various European, Asian and African peoples, their customs, laws and rituals. Chapter seven in Book III bears the title ‘De Lithuania et Lithuanorum vita’ (About Lithuania and the Life of Lithuanians). The country’s geographical position, nature, customs, language, religion and more details are described on pages 181 and 182.
