Alessandro Guagnini (15341614) was an army officer and a writer and chronicler originating from Italy. He served as a Rittmeister in the army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 1550s onwards, and took part in the Livonian War. In 1571 he became a citizen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, fought in the wars against Moscow and the Moldavian Magnate Wars, and was commandant of Vitebsk for 14 years. Guagnini is famous for his book ‘A Description of Sarmatian Europe’, which described the history, geography, religion and traditions of countries of Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Poland, Livonia, the Duchy of Moscow). The large-format ‘Sarmatian Chronicles’, with illustrations, was first published in 1578. The book was in great demand but it was expensive, so a smaller edition without illustrations was prepared. The smaller version is similar to the large-format edition in its structure and content.
