Vladas Urbanavičius’ (b. 1951) sculptures fall within the realm of abstract art. They eschew representation, and their forms are completely self-referential. Between 1987 and 1992, the artist embarked on a series of small abstract bronze sculptures, later repeating some of these works on a larger scale in granite. Sculpture No 14a is the reverse. Its original version, crafted from stone, preceded its bronze replica No 14, which bears the date 1991. Devoid of titles, these sculptures offer the viewer no narrative cues or associations, but both the bronze and granite versions of the series are deeply rooted in natural forms. They evoke distant echoes of earth mounds, sand dunes or snowdrifts, destined to undergo the same erosion that shapes and transforms natural landscapes. However, granite is one of the most resilient and enduring rocks, embodying resistance, constancy and a serene existence. According to the artist, the potency of the work is directly proportionate to the clarity (in the sense of spiritual resonance), rather than the nature, of its form, be it simplified, abstracted or concrete. Refined to the utmost, this form speaks softly and calmly of the richness of existence, without any imposition or insistence.
