Little is known about the artist Jan Gintowt-Dziewałtowski (1904–1980), who lived in Vilnius in the interwar period. However, it is known that he exhibited his work in 1934 and 1935 at exhibitions of the Independent Artists’ Society. The young artist exhibited precise graphic images of buildings in Vilnius, which attracted the attention of critics. The Church of St Anne in Vilnius might have been among them. Built in the late 15th century, the church is still argued about by architectural historians; but since the middle of the 19th century it has been regarded as the city’s most beautiful Gothic monument. It is depicted with particular precision in this picture by Gintowt-Dziewałtowski: the openwork decoration of profiled bricks, the arches, pinnacles, spires and oriel windows create a playful, upwards thrusting movement. The photographically realistic picture of the architecture is offset slightly by the decoratively stylised clouds, which echo the pattern of the decoration.
