The Church of St Catherine, a Late Baroque church with Rococo elements, is one of Vilnius’ most graceful churches. It belonged to the Benedictines, was rebuilt more than once, and acquired its present form in 1743, thanks to the famous architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz. In the picture by S. Butkiewicz , it is painted from Vilniaus Street, the opposite side to that portrayed by Bohusz-Siestrzeńcewicz. The proportions and the magnificent towers emphasise its verticality, while the Chapel of the Providence of God nestles by its side. The painter chose to work in gouache on brown paper, so that the white on a brown background conveys the wintry atmosphere, the roofs covered with snow, and the architectural details, highlighting the lively and quirky Baroque decoration.
