This professional sculpture of St John Nepomucene was made by an expert in the material and form, who used Late Baroque means of expression. The portrayal is traditional: the saint is dressed as a priest, holding a crucifix and a palm to symbolise faith and martyrdom. Many 18th-century sculptures were based on the bronze by Jan Brokoff that was put up on the Charles Bridge in Prague in 1683 to mark the site of the saint’s martyrdom, and any of these could have served as a prototype for this sculpture.
