Stephen Bátory, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1575–1586), reorganised the army, concluded peace with Turkey and the Crimean Khanate, defeated Muscovy, and reconquered Livonia. Under his reign, Vilnius University (1579) was founded and the Supreme Tribunal of Lithuania was established (1581) to examine appellate proceedings of cases tried by land courts.
