This student work by Vytautas Kairiūkštis (18901961), painted when the future innovator of Polish and Lithuanian art was still studying in a Russian gymnasium, is special because early works by him are rare. We have more chance of seeing drawings and paintings by his pupils than works by Kairiūkštis himself from his school and student days. We know him as a teacher, and as a mature artist whose great achievement during his early period was to propagate the avant-garde in Polish art. In the 1930s, he succumbed to the charms of Art Deco, and moved from Vilnius to Panevėžys, and later to Kaunas. He painted elegant, lightly coloured landscapes, and bathers on the golden beaches of Palanga.
