Still-life with fruit

The ability of Algirdas Petrulis (1915–2010) to see the essence of the world in ordinary things would sometimes put him in the ranks of abstract artists. When he was over 70, Petrulis was interested in practical matters only in his daily life, and plunged into a sea of light and colour in his work, thus treading the same path as many other artists. Notable painters who arrived at a new quality in their work in the second half of their lives include Titian (1480/85–1576) and Rembrandt (1606–1669). In their youth, they were aware of a myriad of details, and conveyed them very skilfully in their paintings; while in their old age, they stopped trying to create an illusion of reality, and tried to achieve the unachievable, by expressing the depth and scope of dramatic human experience. Petrulis lived and worked in a different age, and his aims were more modest, but he resembled these two geniuses in his perception of the purpose of art.
