Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965) began to paint still-lifes of flowers seriously in 1925, and continued to do so until his death (cf. Kristina Jokubavičienė, Pranas Domšaitis. Vaizduotės realybė. Reality of the Imagination, Vilnius, 2015, cat. 124, etc). Sometimes he would paint a landscape on the back of a still-life; a few of his still-lifes have even been cut into pieces to form a landscape (Ibid., cat. 467, 485, 498, 528 etc). Occasionally, he would use the back of a different genre picture as an already-prepared surface to paint a still-life. For example, a version of this stilllife in the Ellex Valiunas collection can be found paired with an element from the composition Jesus and Mary Magdalene (Ibid., cat. 654; Lithuanian Art Museum, T-13251a-b). It is sketchier, but no less mesmerising than the version here, which emits African heat and exotica.
