This picture, The Holy Family, painted by a skilled Baroque artist, portrays the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus and St Joseph. The work is full of subtle intimacy and tenderness, and the looks and gestures emphasise the reciprocal relations between the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The details express a foreboding of future sacrifice: the white cloth of the Infant half-lying on Mary’s lap is an allusion to the burial shroud of Christ. In the background is St Joseph, the patron saint of the family, with his staff topped with lilies as his attribute, as was customary in Baroque art.
