Unlike his woodcuts, in which the hard and sharp outlines of architecture are reflected, in his metal engravings, such as etchings and aquatints, Ossecki immersed the city in a subtle burst of light. The buildings seem to be shrouded in mist, and sometimes their edges melt away in the twilight spaces. The greyish tones of the Gates of Dawn, the sky, the foliage of the tree and the dark shadows create a strange and unreal impression, which recalls an image on a photographic negative.
