‘The Great Art of Artillery’ by Kazimieras Simonavičius (Kazimierz Siemienowicz, ca 1600–after 1651), a 17th-century artillery expert, inventor of rockets, and a noble from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of European renown. Written in Latin, the book is divided into five chapters, in which the author overviews the ideas of authors who wrote about pyrotechnics, the construction and calibre of cannons, the production of cannons and cannonballs, ways of aiming, and so on. Chapter 3, in which the author describes a construction of his own invention, multi-stage rockets, with drawings of three-stage rockets, is particularly important. The book was translated into French, German and English, and was used as a textbook for artillery officers for about two centuries.
