KRASZEWSKI JÓZEF IGNACY, WILNO OD POCZĄTKÓW JEGO DO ROKU 1750, T. 1–4, WILNO, 1840–1842.
Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, ‘Vilnius from its Foundation to 1750’, vol. II, 1840.
The first volume of Kraszewski’s work was devoted to the history of the rulers, and the second volume to the Church and the spiritual life of the city, beginning with the cathedral, and ending with the churches of the religious orders (Franciscans, Dominicans, Bernardines, Carmelites, Jesuits, Piarists and Trinitarians), their chronicles and buildings. The illustrations depict several of the most prominent pieces of religious architecture, including the Church of St Anne and the interior of the Church of St Peter and St Paul. We can also find the Church of St Nicholas in this volume, which had already appeared in Baliński’s ‘A History of the City of Vilnius’. Kraszewski stated that it was not the oldest church in the city, and explained the mistake by the confusion between the Catholic and Orthodox churches of the same name.
