Literatų Street has attracted artists no less than Skapo and Bernardinų streets. It used to be called Šv Mykolo Street II , as it led to St Michael’s Church. In the 20th century, it was renamed Literatų because of its historic connections with literary figures. In the 17th century there were several printing presses on it, and in the first half of the 19th century there were many bookshops and second-hand bookstalls, which were often visited by students at Vilnius University. The great Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz lived at number 5. The little-known artist Eugeniusz Zaczyński (1906–1985) painted Literatų Street from the present Volano Street. His simple and realistic watercolour shows an intimate corner of the Old Town in the summer. Today, the brick walls of the street are adorned with artistic plaques commemorating writers, immortalising the links between literature and art in an unexpected and modern way.
